✨ Let’s talk about cleaning prices — honestly and openly. ✨

I’ve put this post together because there’s still a huge gap between what people think cleaning costs… and what it actually takes to run a professional, reliable, fully insured housekeeping business.

People will happily spend £60+ an hour on a massage, facial, haircut or nails — yet anything above £20 an hour for cleaning is sometimes labelled “too expensive.”
But cleaning is skilled, physical, demanding work. It’s a luxury service that gives you more time, more peace of mind, and a beautifully maintained home.

My rates start at £31.25 per hour because they have to. That figure doesn’t go straight into anyone’s pocket — it covers wages, pensions, NI, tax, travel, mileage, holidays, insurance, products, equipment, admin, rent, utilities and all the overheads that keep a business like mine running smoothly and legally. Even at this rate the margins are still tight.

And it’s genuinely sad to see so many self-employed cleaners still charging £15 an hour — the same rate I charged ten years ago. After costs, many end up earning below minimum wage, with zero sick pay or financial safety net. They deserve better. They deserve to charge their worth.

Fair pricing isn’t greedy — it’s sustainable. It keeps good cleaners in business. It means clients get consistency, quality and trust. And it means I can support my family while providing a service I’m proud of. ❤️

I’ve been trialling products by @delphiseco over the last few months and I’m super impressed. It’s really important to me that my team and I aren’t using anything nasty in your homes — but it can be so hard to find eco-friendly products that actually work as well as the big-name toxic nasties filling the supermarket aisles.

And yes, there’s a whole cohort of “just make your own cleaning products” heroes — and I salute you. You’re amazing eco warriors. But vinegar, bicarb and lemons just aren’t for me. On busy days with lots of clients, it’s simply not practical to be mixing up homemade concoctions between jobs.

So I’ve been genuinely delighted to try the Delphis range. Current standouts are the bathroom cleaner, floor cleaner and multi-surface polish… but honestly, everything has been brilliant. They’re officially here to stay, and another big order will be going in soon! ✨

I’ve been holding this one close for a little while… and I’m so excited to finally share it!

The Home Atelier officially has a home 🤍 You can now find me in this dreamy studio in Commercial Yard in lovely Settle.

Sometimes, the best thing you can do for yourself, your family (and your business) is take the leap — clear the paperwork from the kitchen table, leave the living room behind, and move your fleet of hoovers, cleaning equipment and decluttering gear out of everyone’s way!

My husband Tom @twistedroot.uk did all the work on the beams and installed cupboards a few years ago, so it’s lovely to be in a space that he’s worked on.

I had a big delivery of new @we.are.spruce products today and they’ll be in my kit bag from tomorrow!

They tick all of my eco friendly, non toxic, no nasties boxes and they smell fabulous. Eucalyptus Bathroom Spray, Geranium Multi Purpose Spray and a Peppermint Glass and Mirror Spray are my 3 everyday cleaning essentials. I also have the very lovely Bergamot, Patchouli and Geranium Floor Cleaner.

The refills come in powder form in compostable wrappers which means no unnecessary plastic packaging. I use the same aluminium bottles and keep refilling 🙌

I have lots of other favourites too, but for now, I’m having a Spruce moment!

Hello everyone! I’m Amy, a housekeeping pro & a fully Accredited Professional Organiser (yep, you’ll even find me in the @declutterdollies Directory 🎉). I’m married to Tom @twistedroot.uk, have 2 children, a chaotic life and a far from perfect house. In fact, it’s currently more of a dusty building site but we try and make the best of it and I get my cleaning fix by organising and scrubbing other peoples homes! It’s a myth that Professional Organisers have perfect homes. Life catches up with us too and sometimes other stuff is just more important than the laundry or rows of neatly folded socks. I’m realistic, have tonnes of patience and my aim is to help you feel happier in your homes, whether that’s by ruthlessly decluttering, carefully organising or just freshening and cleaning- or maybe all three!

My favourite jobs are the ones where things are totally out of hand. There’s nothing better than seeing the difference you can make when somebody has become completely overwhelmed by the heavy weight of their ‘stuff’.

This has to have been one of my favourite ways to start a housekeeping job… after mentioning to my client how lovely their open shelves would look if they decanted all the packets of bits and bobs in to labelled glass jars…they only went and spent the week doing it 🙌 😃 One simple change has made a complete difference to how the kitchen feels when you walk in… the tea and delicious homemade cake was a bonus! Cleaning a house always feels better when fuelled by a brew and cake!

Many of us have a ‘Monica Cupboard’ somewhere in our houses. That cupboard where things that don’t have a home just accumulate until you struggle to shut the door. You’ve no idea what’s in it but it’s a constant source of stress and angst.

I spent a lovely few hours helping my client sort through this cupboard- we found bed linen, towels, gifts, wrapping paper, sewing machines, suitcases, photo albums, souvenirs, fabric, clothes, hangers, cameras, toilet rolls… the list goes on!

I suggested to my client that we use the cupboard for its intended purpose- linens; and that everything else needed to find a proper home elsewhere in the house. Given limited storage elsewhere in the house we also decided to keep photo albums in there as it’s a nice dry place and also has enough shelving to house them for the time being.

The end result is a nice tidy cupboard where everything is easy to see and access. No more stress finding bed sheets and if my clients fancy a trip down memory lane they can now easily get their albums out 😊

My pet hate is mugs. I have seen so many cupboards stuffed to the brim with ugly mugs, the chief of all ugly mugs being that massive Sports Direct one, beloved member of all building sites. I have seen 20 dirty mugs sat by the sink waiting to be washed up, with another 40 jammed in to a cupboard when a house only has 1 person living it.

People say they have them in case of visitors popping over for a cuppa. Errrmmmm, the entire football team, the coach and all the fans? Unless you’re a village hall or hosting coffee mornings for the whole town you don’t need so many.

People say they collect them. People say they’re given them, people have sentimental attachments to them. I get all of that, I really do, but guys… at the end of the day they’re just mugs. You don’t need to risk a head injury every time you open the cupboard door.

So my top tips..

Discard any broken, cracked or chipped mugs

Try and pick out 2 favourites per person living in the house and just keep those in the kitchen

Wash them up after you’ve used them to save them cluttering up the counter and the need for more mugs just because you haven’t washed up

If you have a lot of mugs from your travels, or ones with sentimental value that you can’t part with consider creating a wacky mug wall. Create a feature of your hoarding and say it’s art! Another idea.. if you’re not quite so attached.. take pictures of each mug (Polaroids are great) and have a memory book for your mugs. Then donate safe in the knowledge that you have something to remember those mugs by…!

From chaos to calm in just one day!

One of my favourite jobs ever… This playroom was so packed with toys & clutter that you couldn’t even see the floor 👀 … but after a day of hard graft (and some brave decision-making from my fabulous client), they parted with about 80% of their possessions.

The result was a calm, inviting, clutter-free space that can be played in again. Sometimes less really is more.

Hello again!

I’ve been quiet on here for a good while as to be honest I’ve been juggling too many things at once and have been split too many ways. My brain got fried!

Anyway behind the scenes a big reset, digital ‘deletion’ (is that a word?!) and streamlining plan has been underway! I am now very happy to say that I am bringing all of my cleaning, housekeeping and decluttering work together in to one fresh new business- The Home Atelier. Originally the plan was to call this Lakers Home Makeovers but in the spirit of completely fresh starts I decided on a completely fresh name.

Along with this, I will also continue to be co-owner of my laundry business, now called Bubble Babes, (formerly Laker & Lane) which you can find at @bubblebabesuk. So that’s just 2 businesses now which is sooo much more manageable and I can breathe again. Sometimes starting anew is exactly what’s needed so welcome to The Home Atelier.

The business is built from my love of helping people feel lighter, more at ease, less stressed and more in love with spaces they live in. Whether it’s a deep clean, a declutter, or those little touches that make a house feel like home- that’s what I’m here for.

I am also incredibly fortunate to be starting my new business with a very full diary and a waiting list for new clients which takes a huge amount of new business pressure away. It’s absolutely amazing and I’m so thankful so everybody that allows me to work in their homes.

Thank you for being here at the beginning of this new chapter- I can’t wait to share more of the journey with you. Amy x
